Meet Megan of Maverick Designs:
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Megan I own Maverick Designs. I have two daughters 4 years and 10 months And a wonderful husband. I just quite my full time job 2 months ago to stay home with my girls and to focus on my sewing.

2. When did you start your biz?

I originally started Maverick Designs in 2010 selling small things like tote bags, wet bags and chalk mats. I closed for about a year and a half because we moved and had another baby and just recently reopened and have started making more items like clothing.

3. Why did you start your biz?

I started my business because I love to sew and having a daughter I was spending a fortune on outfits. I made a tote bag for myself and someone asked if I was selling them. At that time I had no intentions on starting a business but it just kind of happened and I wouldn’t change a thing.

4. What do you find most rewarding about owning your own biz?

I can make my own hours. I love making people happy and to see others get excited about their custom orders is fun. I am a very creative person but I am horrible at drawing so being able to take a vision in my head and sew it together is very rewarding for me.

5. What do you find most frustrating about owning your own biz?

Having to be the boss. Sounds funny but I feel bad having to be the person to say no sometimes. All the paperwork.

6. If you could go back to before your started your biz and tell yourself something, what would you say?

Don’t sell yourself short. You work hard and take a lot of pride in your work so don’t feel bad charging what you feel your items are worth.

7. Do you have kids? If so, do you find it easy to work with them? What tips could you give to balancing work and play with them?

I do, two daughters. It is challenging sometimes but my oldest daughter likes to sew with me and the baby is happy as long as she can see me. I also have amazing family who helps with them when I’m in a crunch and need to get an order done

8. Are you a full time biz owner or do you work outside the home? Any tips on balancing a full/part time job with your biz?

I just quit my full time job two months ago because after the cost of daycare I was actually paying more than I was bringing home so it works out perfect that I can focus on my sewing business now.

9. What do you want to gain from your biz? Where do you see yourself? Ultimate goal?

I want to move more in to designing children’s clothing. I love wearing unique clothing that you don’t see a million times over and I love being able to provide that to others. I hope to be able to grow to the point I can (and will need to) hire 1-2 people to help me.

10. Anything else you would like to share?
